Due to FMD outbreaks, protection and surveillance zones and, if necessary, an extended restricted zone are established in accordance with EU law. These three areas are summarised under the term restricted zone, even if different measures apply in each individual zone. The zones are published in the Official Veterinary and Consumer News in the RIS. The current zones can be found in the announcement on the establishment of a restricted zone to combat foot-and-mouth disease dated 31 March 2025 .
